BRONCHITIS

This is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes lining. These tubes carry air from and to the lungs. Bronchitis can either be chronic or acute.

Causes:
ACUTE:
1-Viral infection 2- Bacteria
3-Exposure to Tobacco Smoke 4- Exposure to Pollutants or Solvents
5- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease ( GERD )
CHRONIC:
1- cigarette smoking 2- continuous attacks of acute bronchitis
3- Air pollution 4- Dust
5- Toxic Gases

TYPES
Acute bronchitis is caused in most cases by a viral infection and may begin after you develop a cold or sore throat. Bronchitis usually begins with a dry cough. After a few days it progresses to a productive cough, which may be accompanied by fever, fatigue, and headache. The cough may last up to several weeks. If not treated acute bronchitis can progress to pneumonia.
Chronic bronchitis is caused in most cases by exposure to tobacco smoke or other irritants. As a result, the airways produce lots of mucus. Inflammation and extra mucus reduce air flow and cause severe coughing and spitting up of phlegm. Phlegm production and inflammation over many years may lead to permanent lung damage and cause disability or even death.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
-Dyspnea
-Cough
-Wheezing
-Fever
-Problems breathing,
-Fatigue
-Inflammation or swelling of the bronchi
-Shortness of breath
- chest pain or discomfort
-headache
-blocked or runny nose

MEDICAL TESTS
-Arterial blood gases show respiratory acidosis -Hemoglobin increases
-Chest X-ray -CBC with differential -Sputum culture
- CXR- chest X-ray -Spirometry
TREATMENT
The goal of treatment for bronchitis is to relieve symptoms and ease breathing. In most cases, acute bronchitis requires only self-care treatments such as:
-Getting more rest
-Taking over-the-counter pain medications
-Drinking fluids
-Breathing in warm, moist air
Complications
Chronic bronchitis
Asthma
Bronchiectasis
cystic fibrosis
Tuberculosis
Sinusitis

Medications..
-Antibiotics. Bronchitis usually results from a viral infection, so antibiotics aren't effective.
-Cough medicine. It's best not to suppress a cough that brings up mucus, because coughing helps remove irritants from your lungs and air passages
- Other medications. If you have asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), your doctor may recommend an inhaler and other medications to reduce inflammation and open narrowed passages in your lungs.

Prevention
Avoid cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke increases your risk of chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Get vaccinated. Many cases of acute bronchitis result from influenza, a virus. Getting a yearly flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. You may also want to consider vaccination that protects against some types of pneumonia.
Wash your hands. To reduce your risk of catching a viral infection, wash your hands frequently and get in the habit of using hand sanitizers.
