l. . . interestingly, one of the most common problems initially confronted by preceptors is their preceptee’s inability to organize and complete work in timely fashion.
lComponents of Prioritization
lTaking time at the beginning of the shift to review tasks that:
are essential at the moment
must be completed on schedule
must be accomplished during the shift, and
would be nice to do but are not essential
lComponents of Prioritization
lSpending a few minutes at the end of the shift to:
review the events/activities during the shift
discuss how preceptee feels about the day
consider effectiveness of the approach to learning and
propose changes if necessary
lHelpful Hints
lApproach with a helpful rather than corrective manner
lWhen priorities are displaced, determine the perspective and rationale of the preceptee and provide gentle, rather than harsh feedback
l
The role of the preceptor
in the clinical practicum
is widely perceived to be
pivotal to the overall success
of the preceptee
